SQUADRON SPONSORING COMMITTEE
Who We Are and What We Do:
The 876 Lincoln Alexander Squadron Sponsoring Committee (SSC) is a not-for-profit organization that is governed by the Air Cadet League of Canada (http://aircadetleague.com). We are made up of volunteers, including parents of the Cadets in our squadron, and our mandate – broadly speaking – is to assist the Officer staff with the organization and funding of squadron activities. More specifically, our responsibilities include: securing suitable facilities for squadron administration and training, managing funds raised, organizing optional activities, advocating for the squadron's needs, overseeing recruitment and screening initiatives with a focus towards attracting new Cadets, staff and SSC members and coordinating fundraising activities to ensure that sufficient funds are available to support the squadron's operations. The SSC also holds monthly meetings to determine how best to achieve these responsibilities and shares information about our progress and upcoming events with parents and guardians.
The Department of National Defence (DND) and the Government of Canada funds a substantial portion of the Cadet program; however, costs associated with facility rentals, power flying, some field trips, insurance, awards, transportation and other administrative costs are not covered. This is where the SSC comes in! The role of the SSC is crucial to the overall functioning of the squadron. The yearly registration fee per Cadet is $60 and this money is sent directly to the Air Cadet League of Canada. 876 Lincoln Alexander Squadron endeavors to ensure that no Cadet is denied access to the Cadet Program or is prevented from participating in squadron activities due to their family’s financial situation.
Join Us!
The SSC and the squadron itself would not be able to operate without the continued support of our dedicated Parent volunteers. Parent volunteers contribute by helping to run the canteen (a small pop-up “store” where Cadets can purchase refreshments and other small items) on Wednesday nights, assisting with the planning and execution of special events and driving Cadets to and from events including Tag Days (a bi-annual fundraising initiative). Parents and guardians also have the option of joining the SSC and filling key leadership roles. We highly encourage all parents/guardians to get involved with the squadron! An SSC member is usually available most Wednesday nights at Lester B. Pearson to answer questions or to address any concerns.
